Wayne Houston Valentine

Wayne Houston Valentine, age 90, of Shoshone, Idaho, passed peacefully on August 13, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Born January 25, 1936, in Jerome County, Idaho, Wayne’s early life was shaped by both loss and love. He was born to Rulon and Belinda Cox. After the death of his mother, he was adopted at age three by Elmer (Dutch) and Grace Valentine of Preston, Idaho, who nurtured the character, curiosity, and quiet strength that would define him for the rest of his days.

Wayne graduated from Preston High School and went on to attend the University of Idaho in Moscow, earning his B.S. in Civil Engineering in 1958. His dedication to learning and excellence became a hallmark of his life’s work.

On June 28, 1957, Wayne married Caroline Steinmann of Ashton, Idaho. Together they built a life rooted in faith, devotion, and family, welcoming three children—David, Dale, and Sonja. Wayne’s faith was central to who he was. As a member of the Lutheran Church, he served congregations in many capacities, including Lay Minister, Adult Bible Teacher, and Evangelist. His gentle leadership and steadfast belief touched countless lives.

Wayne devoted over 30 years of service to the U.S. Forest Service as a Civil Engineer, completing assignments across Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Montana, and Washington D.C., and even supervising bridge reconstruction in Ecuador following a devastating earthquake. Wayne was also commissioned by NASA on a special project that utilized his knowledge and Photogrammetry skills.  His commitment to stewardship and public service was matched by his dedication to his country; he served in the United States Army at Fort Lewis, Washington, attaining the rank of Sergeant.

 After retiring in 1991, Wayne continued to pour his time and talents into meaningful work. He volunteered with Laborers for Christ, helping build and remodel churches and ministry facilities—work that allowed him to combine his engineering skill with his deep love for the Lord. These projects became a treasured part of his later years, giving him the joy of serving alongside others and strengthening communities of faith.  

In 2009, Wayne’s life was blessed again when he married Dolores Rood. With Dolores, he gained three more children and a new chapter filled with love, companionship, shared purpose, and joy. They made their home in Emmett, Idaho, where they were deeply involved in the Heritage Christian Church. Wayne joined the Gideons and found great meaning in distributing Bibles throughout the community—an act of service that reflected his heart for ministry and his desire to share hope.

Professionally, Wayne was a registered Professional Engineer, Land Surveyor, and Certified Photogrammetrist. He authored several technical papers, contributed to the Surveyors Handbook, and lectured widely. His expertise and leadership were recognized through his involvement in numerous professional societies. He was a Fellow of the A.S.C.E., a member of Mensa (the largest and oldest high IQ society in the world - open only to individuals who score in the top 2% of standardized intelligence testing), and a licensed pilot—accomplishments that spoke to both his intellect and his adventurous spirit.

Wayne’s hobbies—travel, woodworking, Gideon events, and time with family—were expressions of what he valued most: discovery, craftsmanship, service, and love. He approached each with enthusiasm and gratitude.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his adoptive parents; his beloved wife Caroline; two brothers; three sisters, and his son Dale Valentine. He is survived by his cherished wife, Dolores Valentine; his son David (Rebecca) Valentine; his daughter Sonja Garza; his stepchildren Tim (Donna) Rowlan, Shelley (Jason) Engle, and Merrie (Heath) Martin; along with 16 grandchildren,16 great‑grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

Wayne lived a life marked by devotion—to God, to family, to service, and to excellence. His presence was steady, his wisdom generous, and his love enduring. Those who knew him will remember a man of deep conviction, gentle humor, and unwavering purpose. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched and the grateful family who loved him dearly.

We will miss him profoundly and honor him always.
