Verna was born on September 23, 1929 in Barron, Wisconsin to Edwin and Kathryn Johnson. She passed away in her home, in Emmett, Idaho on October 3, 2023. She grew up on a dairy farm. After graduating from high school, she went to a 2-year Normal School in Rice Lake, Wisconsin. In 1948 she taught at a one room school in Wisconsin, named Stanfold. She taught 1st through 8th grade for 2 years. She married Lawrence in 1949 in Barron, Wisconsin and moved to Emmett, Idaho in 1950. After moving to Idaho, she went on to earn her BA degree at the College of Idaho. Verna taught in the Emmett School district for 42 years, teaching many grades. After retiring she was a substitute teacher for several years.
Verna belonged to ADK, a teacher’s sorority, and received a 50th Golden Sister Award. She also belonged to BPW (Business of Professional Women) and held many offices. She joined the Retired Teachers group and also belonged to PEO, the Philanthropic Educational Organization, committed to helping women pursue higher education.
Verna and Lawrence owned a fruit orchard on the south slope in Emmett for over 50 years and sold cherries and peaches. They enjoyed seeing everyone return for u-pick fruit every season.
Verna's passion was playing bridge several times a month with her wonderful friends. She also loved meeting up with other great friends for coffee, lunches, and dinners. She also loved tending her flowers and her beautiful yard. She and Lawrence traveled to many cities around the states and enjoyed many excursions including a fabulous trip to Italy.
Verna loved her church, Sacred Heart. She became very close to so many within the church and they'd all have the best times at various functions throughout the year. She, most of all, loved her priest, Father Oscar.
Verna is preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence, in which they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Linda; her parents and 2 brothers, Robert and Donald Johnson. She is survived by her daughter, Lois Nickle (Tom); grandchildren, Michael Brown (Kristin), Marsha Brown (Adam) and 3 great grandchildren Josh Brown, Ryan Brown and Daya Lerner.
Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, October 10, 2023 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Emmett with Rosary starting at 10:30 prior to mass. A viewing will be available prior to services at the church. Services are in the care of the Potter Funeral Chapel of Emmett.
