Rex Bussert Obituary

Rex Duane Bussert, a beloved father, brother, and friend to many, passed peacefully into eternal rest on March 19, 2025, at the age of 84. With a radiant smile that could light up any room and a zest for life that inspired all who knew him, Rex now rests in Heaven, reunited with loved ones in the embrace of his Lord and Savior.

Born December 2, 1940, in Eminence, Missouri, Rex was the son of Virgil Luther Bussert and Mary Violet Bussert. He shared his childhood with his sister, Joan Tinker, and his brother, Pearl Bussert. In June 1947, Virgil moved the family to Emmett, Idaho, drawn by opportunities in the valley’s fruit orchards. It was in Emmett that Rex’s life took root—attending high school, meeting the love of his life, Donna (Rice) Portrey, and building the foundation for a family.

Rex and Donna married and raised three sons: Kevin, Mike, and Mark Bussert—instilling in them values of love, faith, and resilience. After high school, Rex began a dedicated career at Boise Cascade, working tirelessly in the lumber yard until his retirement in 2001. His commitment to his craft mirrored the loyalty he showed his loved ones. In later years, Rex married Cindy Sutliff, embracing her five children-Robert, Anthony, Debra, Victoria, and Elizabeth—as his stepchildren, further enriching his family.

Shaped by his Missouri roots, Rex learned to hunt as a boy, often bringing wild game home to sustain his family. This love of the outdoors followed him to Idaho, where he became an avid camper, hunter, fisherman, and Harley-Davidson rider—passions he shared with his family on countless adventures. Alongside his brother Pearl, he co-founded Emmett’s Black Canyon Bowmen Club, leaving a lasting mark on his community and its heritage.

Rex’s life was anchored by a deep faith in God and an unyielding love for his family. His compassion knew no bounds—he welcomed all with open arms, his warm heart a refuge for anyone in need. Known for his infectious positivity, Rex faced every day with gratitude, never letting a complaint dim his spirit.

Rex leaves behind a legacy of kindness, resilience, and joy. He is survived by his brother Pearl; his sons Kevin (Patricia), Mike, and Mark; his stepchildren Robert, Anthony, Debra, Victoria, and Elizabeth; numerous grandchildren; and a wide circle of loved ones who will forever hold him dear. As we say goodbye, we find peace in knowing he is home, surrounded by those who await him in eternity.
