Phyllis Mitchell Obituary

Phyllis June Mitchell
December 27, 1934 – April 18, 2026

Phyllis was the only child born to Henry Paul and Helen Blanch Condon of Walla Walla, Washington. She was not an only child as her father had a son from a previous marriage; Dale who was 11 years older. His mother had died a few years after he was born. Phyllis loved making doll clothes as a child and even dressed up her dog Skip, pushing him up and down her street in a baby carriage. Skip was extremely loyal to Phyllis and they shared a great bond. Phyllis also enjoyed spending time at her father’s Bakery conveniently located close to home.

Phyllis grew up in the Nazarene Church and gave her life to Jesus at an early age and was a dedicated Christian. She graduated High School in Walla Walla in 1953. The mascot of which was Ironically “The Blue Devils”. She went to Northwest Nazarene College and made many lifelong friends before graduating in 1957. That summer she was visiting a friend taking a class at the NNC campus when the Dean of Students saw her and offered her a job teaching Home Economics. After teaching at NNC for a year, she moved to California and taught Home Ec at Pasadena Nazarene College. While there she got her Masters.

In 1961 she went to her friends Jen and Loring Beals in Boise on an invited visit where she met David Allen Mitchell, also invited at the same time. They went to McCall for the week end and as Phyllis put it, “We were hooked”! Dave proposed to her on December 27, 1961. They were married July 28, 1962. They had a son; Steven Paul in December 1964 and a daughter; Karen Lynn in November 1965.

The family moved to Emmett, Idaho in 1968 and immediately attended the Nazarene Church. Phyllis and Dave were involved in teaching the teen class and were very active in the Church for over 56 years. Phyllis also taught at Borah High School, NNC part time when her children were young and Greenleaf Friends Academy in Greenleaf, Idaho until after her children graduated high school at Greenleaf.

Phyllis loved to sew and was involved with the Valley of Plenty quilt club. She also taught sewing classes every Tuesday at Wiles Sewing Center to people that bought Elna sewing machines. During that time, she also made all of her children’s clothes. She especially loved to make corduroy pants for her son. She made many quilts, her favorites being what she called “Some Day” quilts.  She made them for her grandchildren for some day when they got married. She also made one for an adopted grandson when he got married.

Phyllis suffered dementia for the last few years of her life. She was 91 years old upon her death. She was preceded in death by her husband Dave. She is survived by her son Steve Mitchell; daughter Karen & spouse David Ayotte; Grandchildren: Tyler & Nicole Chambers, Sarah & Anna Gistelli, Trystan & Mairin Chambers, Samantha Mitchell, Tanyr & Katie Chambers, Stacy & Christian Fuqua and great grandchildren; Zenos, Zenon & Zola Fuqua, Cayden & Charlotte Chambers, and James Chambers.
