Born on January 4, 1952, in the close-knit community of Emmett, Idaho, Michael Kenneth Harris took his final breath on December 7, 2024, in the comfort of his own home, at the age of 72. A man known for his humor, generosity, and warm-hearted nature, Mike was a beacon to all who knew him.
Mike’s journey began at Emmett High School, where he graduated in 1971 with determination and a smile that never faded. It was at Foodliner, stocking shelves, where destiny had him crossing paths with his future wife, the lovely Robin Rood. Their love story, filled with laughter and countless cherished moments, culminated in their marriage on April 23, 1976.
Mike pursued education at Boise State University, earning his degree in the spring of 1978. His passion for science and sports led him to teach, initially inspiring seventh graders at Parkview Middle School. He then moved on to teach high school Earth Science and Physical Education, where he discovered his true calling: coaching. Mike wore many hats, juggling roles as the Varsity Basketball Coach, and coaching Junior Varsity Football, Basketball, and Baseball. His dedication culminated in his appointment as Athletic Director from 1996 to 2009, and in 2023, his lifelong commitment was recognized with the Third District Coaches Lifetime Service Award.
Beyond the classroom and courtside, Mike relished life’s simple pleasures. Trips to Jackpot, camping, and fishing excursions were often on the agenda. He reveled in stories of great catches and missed strikes with his cherished brother Warren. Sports events were a family affair; Mike attended boxing matches to cheer on his brother Kenny. And after retirement, you’d often find him at McDonald’s, sharing endless laughter and much-needed caffeine with former students and colleagues.
Mike’s family values were deep-rooted. He was a father of 3 girls and had a grandson who he was incredibly close with. He was preceded in death by his father, Warren Willis Harris; mother Lois Keene-Sanders; stepdad Jim Keene; brother Warren; and sister Linda. The legacy he leaves behind is continued by his beloved wife, Robin; daughters, Tracy, Kelly, and Katie; grandson, Gavin; brothers, Kenny, Joey, Rick, and John; sister, Angie; and many nieces and nephews and very close friends.
A memorial service to celebrate Mike’s extraordinary life will be held on December 26, at the Willow Grove Event Center, 4131 West Central Road, Emmett, Idaho, at 2:00 PM. In this gathering of love and reflection, we’ll remember Mike for his selfless love for his students, his dedication as a coach, and the memorable moments spent with friends and family. May he rest in peace, forever remembered and cherished.
