Maxine Mitchell Obituary

Maxine V. Mitchell of Emmett, Idaho, 100 years old, departed this life on April 4th, 2022 in the home of her grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Terry and Tammy Mitchell of Emmett, where she called home the last four years of her life.

Maxine was born March 4th, 1922 in Wallace, Nebraska to Violet Maude Olinger and Lawrence Leander Flowers, and was one of twelve siblings. She met her husband, James Robert Mitchell in Emmett and they married on July 24, 1939. They enjoyed 54 years of marriage before Jim passed in 1993. Together they raised four wonderful children, Jim “Bump”, Larry “Zip”, Sam and Carolyn on their ranch north of Emmett.

Maxine was a devoted wife and mother but also helped raise numerous children that were not her own. She was affectionately known as a Second-Mom, Granny or Aunt Max to any child who needed one. She was a hard worker who rarely took a break. If there were kids who needed caring for, a relative who needed a helping hand, or a job that needed done she didn’t hesitate. As a child, Maxine was a great help to her mother taking care of younger siblings and the home. On the ranch she cooked huge meals for crews of men to feed them during the cattle and harvesting seasons and kept a wonderful and inviting home for any visitors who dropped by. Maxine also volunteered for many years with the Girl Scouts of America both in her daughter, Carolyn’s troop, and then again for her granddaughters, Christeen and Angie.

Maxine and Jim’s ranch was a place of open invitation and delicious homecooked meals. Each weekend was a gathering of family and friends. Their 13 grandchildren spent their free time at the ranch during their summers and weekends where grandma and grandpa were able to provide some of their best adventures and memories. Maxine provided a loving environment that everyone enjoyed, and some felt like was their second home.

Her beautiful life will be remembered well by her surviving family including her sons, James “Bump” Mitchell (Edna) of Emmett, Lawrence “Zip” Mitchell (Doug Mann) of Caldwell; daughter, Carolyn Puckett (Royal) of Eagle; sister, Patricia Gunard, and brothers, Raymond Flowers and Dwayne Flowers. She is also survived by 11 of her grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and 18 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Violet and Lawrence Flowers; husband, James Mitchell; children, Samuel Mitchell and her baby girl; grandsons, Travis Mitchell and Jeremy Puckett; sisters, Helen Adams, Fern Dealy, Dorthy King, Wanda Rice, and brothers, Roy Flowers, Lawrence "Sonny" Flowers, Darrell Flowers and David Flowers.

Maxine was a wonderful cook and caretaker who thrived on serving her family. She was a loving, spunky, one-of-a-kind person and will be greatly missed!
