Lynn Morriss

February 14, 1936 ~ September 25, 2026 (age 90) 90 Years Old

Obituary

Lynn Morriss was born February 14, 1936 in Murray, Utah to Derrall Ernest Morriss and Dorothy Smith.  He and his twin sister Ann were the first children born to the couple.  He died at home in Emmett, Idaho on September 25, 2026 at the age of 90 of natural causes.
He married Lois Marlene Thornock on September 10, 1955, in Emmett, Idaho. Their marriage was later solemnized on September 10, 1956, in the Salt Lake Temple.
He was part of the Aviation Company, 116th Armored Cavalry Regiment, of the National Guard and enjoyed flying over his girlfriend’s (Lois) property. In addition, he held a pilot’s license and enjoyed flying his personal airplane with his wife and his first baby.
He had a long career maintaining commercial aircraft.  He was educated at the Aviation Division (Aircraft Mechanics) operating under the Trade and Industrial and Education Division of Idaho State College in Pocatello, Idaho. After graduating Lynn worked 2 years for Boeing before he started his long career with the airlines. He worked for the same company, although through mergers it became 5 different airlines: West Coast, Air West, Hughes Air West, Republic and Northwest Airlines.
All four of their children (Karen, Gary, Colleen, and Steven) were born in Renton, WA. Over the years, the family lived in Renton, WA, Boise, ID, Vancouver, WA, Livermore, CA and Seattle, WA.
Lynn enjoyed Boy Scouts of America campouts and 50-mile hikes with his boys.  He enjoyed camping, boating, and fishing.  His children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren have fond memories of riding in the boat and learning how to fish and drive his boat.
While living in Memphis they traveled to Florida, Sault Ste Saint Marie, Michigan. They particularly enjoyed visiting Branson, Missouri, and seeing the shows.  While in Memphis they learned to fish in the warm waters of that region.
He retired after 38 years in the airline industry from Northwest Airlines in Memphis, Tennessee. He lived in Memphis for 14 years which is longer than any other previous location. Lynn and Lois have lived the last 28 years in Emmett, Idaho, enjoying full retirement.
He started his retirement building his house in Emmett. He and Lois have many fond memories camping in their RV.  Alaska, Hell’s Canyon, Anderson Ranch, Cascade Reservoir, Poison Creek and the Oregon Coast were among their favorite places to camp.  During the winter they frequently went south to Quartzite and Yuma, Arizona, to get away from the cold temperatures in Emmett. They traveled with family to New York to visit church history sites.
Even though they were able to fly at a discounted rate, most of their traveling was by car or RV.  However, they did take a trip to Hawaii and a couple of cruises to Alaska.
Lynn was very mechanical.  His wife and children felt he could fix anything!  He enjoyed woodworking and made bunk beds and dressers for his children. He could maintain most household items and rarely called for professional repair help.
He had great stamina and took his grandchildren for long walks in the hills east of their home on Plaza Road.  Lynn was known for his legendary hand grip.  The young men liked to challenge him to see who could squeeze the tightest.  He always came out the winner.  Even with the strong grip, he was gentle and kind to everyone.
He was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served valiantly in many callings, including: Stake Presidency Counselor, Bishop, Bishopric Counselor, Physical Facilities Representative, High Council member, Stake Sunday School President, and many others.
He looked after his mother, and mother-in-law (Illa Thornock) until they both passed caring for their yards and other incidentals.  Lynn and Lois took Illa on several trips.
Lynn is survived by his wife of 71 years, Lois; his brothe,r Larry; their four children, Karen (Kevin), Gary (Barbara), Colleen (Duane), Steven (Katrina); 15 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Derrall and Dorothy and his twin sister Ann.
The family thanks the care team from Horizon Home Health and Hospice: Mary, Cheryl, Jennifer, Courtney, Trinda, and many others who cared for Lynn.
