Obituary

Alva Lon McConnel, 88, of Montour, Idaho, died Thursday, June 4, 2026. Lon was born on March 14, 1938, to Alva and Coline Porter McConnel. He grew up on the family farm in Montour, the oldest of five boys, and spent his childhood with his brothers hunting, fishing, and learning the value of hard work, while developing the faith that would guide him through his life.

He graduated from Emmett High School, and then went to the University of Idaho where he earned his Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, his Master's degree in Education, and – most importantly – met his future wife, Judy Walser. Lon and Judy married on June 16, 1962, and they spent 64 years together building a life of love and family and faith.

Lon taught school for several years in Emmett, and worked as a guidance counselor in Anchorage, Alaska, before returning to Montour. There, in the valley where the McConnel family had been farming and ranching for generations, he and Judy were able to buy a farm of their own. Over the next fifty years Lon lived the life he loved, raising wheat, alfalfa seed and hay, and Holstein heifers, while working side by side with his Dad, with his sons as they grew up, with his brother Lee, and other cherished family members and friends.

A man of strong faith, Lon led by example, as a Sunday school teacher and a committed member of his church, and by serving on community organizations. He always had a helping hand for his family, friends, and neighbors, and always enjoyed a good visit with everyone who stopped by.

Lon is survived by his wife, Judy, and his sons Mark (Darryl) and Craig (Lindsey). Also surviving are his brothers Lee (Sharon), Paul (Peggy), Steve (Linda), and sister-in-law Isabella, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Patrick, and his sister-in-law Lila.
