Kay Nichols

Kay C. Nichols, age 89, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2026. She was born on July 30, 1937, to Harold and Haldeen Chapman in Emmett, Idaho, where she spent her childhood in both Emmett and New Meadows.

Kay graduated from Emmett High School in 1955 and later attended Kinmans Business School in Spokane, Washington, where she trained as a Legal Secretary. She worked for attorney Louis Gorrano, then Idaho First Bank, before beginning a long and valued career with the Emmett School District as a high school bookkeeper. Her steady presence, sharp mind, and warm personality made her a beloved part of every workplace she joined.

On August 28, 1965, Kay married William Nichols at her mother’s home in Emmett. Their marriage was filled with devotion, laughter, and partnership for 37 years until Bill’s passing in 2002. Their daughter, Karen, was born in 1973, and Kay embraced motherhood with the same kindness and strength she showed in every part of her life. She loved hearing God’s word every Sunday and carried her faith gently into the way she lived. Kay was always ready to lend a hand to anyone in the community who needed it.
Kay had a remarkable ability to listen and comfort everyone around her in a way that made people feel understood and valued. She offered humor at just the right moment, softening life’s hardest edges, and she shared advice that was both practical and full of heart. Whether she was comforting a friend, guiding a family member, or simply brightening someone’s day, Kay’s presence made life feel lighter. Her wisdom was gentle, her laughter contagious, and her compassion unwavering.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Haldeen Chapman; her husband, William E. Nichols; and her stepson, William F. Nichols.
 

Kay is survived by her daughter, Karen Nichols; her grandchildren, Kayla Buchta, Bryan Buchta, William Buchta, Kelsey Nichols, and Cami Nichols; and her daughter-in-law, Pam Nichols. Her family will forever carry her humor, her guidance, and her love in their hearts. We also thank Horizon Home Health and Hospice for the support, care, and love they provided.

A graveside service will be held on August 28, 2026, at 10:00 AM at the Emmett Cemetery.

Kay’s legacy is one of kindness, laughter, and the quiet strength of someone who made the world better simply by being in it.
