Katherine "Sue" Vogel

Katherine Susan Vogel passed away on May 22, 2022, at the home of her daughter.  Sue was born October 16, 1928, at Shoshone, ID to Ennis Jennings White and Viola Hunter White.  Sue was the middle child, between older brother John and younger sister Lucille. She spent her childhood in the area, where the family grew hay and grain, and sold cream from a few milk cows.

  Sue graduated from the College of Idaho in Caldwell and taught junior high and high school at Cambridge. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Ellis Vogel. They married in Jerome on June 10, 1951. The couple lived in Bonners Ferry, where Sue taught high school math, and where their 2 daughters, Lauri and Kathy, were born. They later moved to Moyie Springs and Coeur d'Alene, eventually settling in Emmett, ID after Ellis' retirement. Ellis died in 1999 and Sue stayed on in Emmett, continuing to work and play on their joint project, the “Goose Ranch.” The “Goose Ranch” was a nickname for the property they had on the Payette River. Sue wanted to avoid being called “Mother Goose”, so she tried to get the family to call it “Gray Wings”, but that never quite stuck.

  In 2017, Sue and her sister Lucille moved to Eugene, OR where her daughter Kathy and son-in-law Scott Crable live. At their retirement community they were simply known as “the sisters” when people had trouble keeping their names straight.

  Sue was an active member of PEO in all the towns where she lived, celebrating 50 years with the organization in 2020. She was also a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed gardening and was particularly fond of succulents. Sue was often described as “such a sweet lady”. While that was true, those who knew her also knew her to be a strong, highly intelligent woman who was happily talked into a little mischief. Her chuckle, which only seemed to be more prevalent as she got older, will be sorely missed.

  Sue is survived by her daughter, Kathy (Scott) Crable; her son-in-law, Tim Kittredge; her sister, Lucille; and her grandsons, Jason Anderson (Gina Marich) and Matt (Pam) McMillan. She is preceded in death by her husband, Ellis Charles Vogel, and her daughter, Lauri Diane Kittredge.

  Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 31, 2022, at the Potter Funeral Chapel of Emmett, ID. A viewing will be held prior to the service from 10–11:00 a.m. A Committal Service will be held 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at the Cambridge Cemetery of Cambridge, ID.
