Janet Loraine McConnell, passed away peacefully in Ontario, Oregon on September 6, 2024. Born on May 3, 1942 to Dr. Ralph A. Goodwin and Loraine Shaw Goodwin, she lived most of her life in Emmett, Idaho.
Jan graduated from Emmett High School in 1959 and attended Idaho State University. She first worked as a paralegal in Boise, then moved to Seattle where she was a secretarial supervisor at Boeing Corporation. Upon her return to Idaho, Jan worked as a dispatcher at the Gem County Sheriff’s Office, a fruit inspector for the State of Idaho Inspection Service, and in quality control at Micron. She also worked briefly as a massage therapist. Her marriages to Joseph Kallas and William “Bill” McConnell ended in divorce.
Known for her strong will, sharp wit, and keen intellect, Jan had a kind heart and was a loyal friend. She was an accomplished pianist and a talented calligrapher, artist and poet. She had a knack for puzzles, word games, and cards. Playing in a weekly bridge group was a highlight for Jan. She loved animals, especially dogs, birds, and horses. A lover of sports, Jan was an avid fan of the Boston Red Socks and Gonzaga men’s basketball, and was a gifted athlete who enjoyed softball, bowling and golf. Jan was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church.
In October of 2001, Jan moved to Brookdale Assisted Living in Ontario where she received exceptionally kind and loving care. Special thanks go to Darcy, Ronda, Gail, Misty, and the entire team at Brookdale, as well as Joyce, Michaela, and Stacy from Lighthouse Hospice, who ensured her final days were comfortable and peaceful.
Jan is survived by her sister, Diane (Don) Wolf; her brother, David (Ileene) Goodwin; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Ralph A. Goodwin and Loraine Shaw Goodwin; her grandparents, J.E. and Alice Shaw and Samuel and Olena Goodwin; and beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins.
