Janean Johnston, 71, of Emmett, Idaho passed away at her home on July 27, 2024, due to complications of a stroke.
Jan was born June 28, 1953 in Caldwell, Idaho to Charles and Eva Carpenter. She attended elementary and high school in Caldwell, Idaho and college at BYU in Provo, Utah.
On March 12, 1976, she married Rick Johnston in the Salt Lake Temple. Rick and Jan made their home in Caldwell, Idaho and then moved to Emmett in 1979 where they raised their family.
She is survived by her husband Rick of Emmett; her children Matt (Jennifer) Johnston of Caldwell and Greta (Danny) Summers of Middleton; her grandchildren Tanner and Zachary Johnston, and Tobey (Caylee) Summers, Parker (Emma) Summers, Lilly and Averi Summers; her siblings Skip (Sheri), Susan (Larry) DeCoursey, and Jeff (Jill); and numerous cousins.
Jan was born with a love of music. She was particularly talented with a beautiful singing voice, and as a pianist and organist. She was invited to sing for numerous occasions throughout her life. In high school, she loved performing in choir and musicals, with a lead role in Cinderella. After singing a musical number at a stake conference, the regional representative speaker from Seattle asked her to sing at his funeral. She wanted to be in the Promised Valley musical production and decided to audition to be in the choir. As she came in, Sam Thompson, the director, looked at her and said you do not need to audition, you are in. She treasured her time serving as an organist in the Boise Idaho Temple and found great joy in serving others.
An avid Boise State fan, she loved attending games, where she would cheer loudly and voice her opinion about poor officiating. Yet she reminded fans not to get upset at the players because she recognized they are just kids doing their best.
As a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she loved serving children, youth, and friends in many capacities. Her enduring testimony and relationship with Jesus Christ, gave her strength to cope with the many physical trials throughout her life. She was naturally kind and gentle- always concerned more about others than herself. Her bright smile, shining eyes, and compassionate heart will always be remembered. She was a light and example to all who knew her, especially her family, and leaves behind a legacy of kindness and love.
Services will be held on Friday, August 2, 2024 at 11:00 AM with a viewing from 10:00 -10:50 AM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in downtown Emmett (1001 East 2nd Street).
