Herman Gedney Obituary

Herman Herbert Gedney, 91, of Emmett, Idaho died November 27, 2020 after a prolonged illness. Funeral service will be Saturday, December 19, 11 AM at Potter Funeral Chapel in Emmett.

Herman was born May 28, 1929, the son of Curtis and Frances Gillespie Gedney, in Fruita, Colorado. He graduated from Anaheim (CA) High School, where he met his wife, in 1947. He married Bonnie June Rhoads on June 24, 1949, and to this union three sons were born: Curtis, Neil, and Brian. They had been married for 68 blissful years when Bonnie died in 2018.

Herman worked as a firefighter for thirty years, primarily in the mountains and brushlands of southern California. He began working with the California Division of Forestry in Orange CA (1947-1954), then later for the Los Angeles County Fire Department in the Newhall CA area (1958-1981). In the interim he worked as an oil driller in Long Beach. In 1981 he and Bonnie retired to their vacation home in Lake Nacimiento, CA following an injury. All who knew Herm and Bonnie well remember the years at “The Lake” fondly. They entertained a non-stop parade of family and friends for over 22 years with waterskiing and fishing by day, and Mom’s sumptuous meals and Herm’s barbeque on the deck overlooking the lake in the evenings. Dad loved to listen to “straight-ahead” jazz and political TV shows for relaxation. They loved spending time and having fun with their family and friends. Dad also enjoyed hunting with his sons, friends, and dogs. In 2003 they moved to Emmett to be near two of their sons and three grandchildren.

Herm and Bonnie also shared a vibrant Christian faith. They were married in Emmanuel Baptist Church in Long Beach, and Herm was baptized there in the mid-1950s. They were youth sponsors with the Grace Baptist Church in Newhall when the boys were growing up, which kept them young and active. Later Herm served as the director of the Boys Brigade, which helped form Christian young men through group camping and other outdoor activities.

Herman is survived by his three sons, Curtis (Nancy), Neil (Janet Hunter), also a career fireman in his father’s footsteps, and Brian (Terri); grandchildren Matthew Gedney, Christina Garver, Sarah Brown, Crystal Swanson, and Neil Gedney; great grandchildren Audrey, Penelope, Sawyer, Finn, Dominick, Renn, Willow and Theus. Also beloved daughter-in-law Rebecca Thelin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, four sisters (Leona, Connie, Marjorie, Elsie), one brother (Curtis Warner), and grandson Patrick Gedney.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 19, 2020 at the Potter Funeral Chapel in Emmett.  Burial will follow in the Emmett Cemetery.
