Helen Grider Obituary

Helen Arlene Grider was born on October 12, 1937 and passed away on the evening of April 12, 2024 at 86 years old in her home, with her daughters by her side. Helen was born in Emmett, Idaho to Meta and Vernon Wright. She was the youngest of five children.
Helen graduated from Emmett High School in 1955. She married Leon Grider on April 28, 1956. They had three children, Brenda, Melanie and Lance. Helen and Leon were married for 50 years before Leon passed on December 11, 2006.
Helen held various jobs throughout her life, including being a secretary in her earliest years at an Insurance Office in Boise. She worked in Fruit Orchards and Packing Sheds. She and Leon were farmers and raised a variety of row crops that included strawberries, squash, pumpkins, green beans, watermelon, cantaloupe, sweet corn and potatoes. As her children grew older, Helen went to work at the Post Office in Emmett, starting out as a Sub-Rural Route Carrier advancing on to becoming the Assistant Postmaster. She spent 6 months as the Postmaster in Wendell, Idaho. Upon retiring from the Postal Service, she had more time to help with the Family Business, Grider’s Greenhouses. Helen’s ambition, drive and hard work ethic were well known by all who knew her. Whenever her name comes up it is always accompanied by the words that she was one of the hardest working women that they had ever met.
Helen loved animals and had a knack for bringing a variety of them home. She raised Akita Dogs, with visions of making sled dogs out of them. She and Leon had milk cows, beef cows, pigs, geese, ducks, chickens, peacocks, turkeys, goats, guinea fowl, donkeys and llamas.
Helen and her family went on many cruises after the death of her son, which included several to Alaska, as that was her favorite destination, also going to Hawaii, Mexico, the Caribbean and different repositioning cruises along the California Coast up to Canada. She loved the Butchart Gardens. Helen enjoyed growing plants and being outside in her garden and flowers. She spent her last years crocheting, which she excelled at. She stayed busy up to the very end of her life, even when her eyesight was failing, and her body was becoming frail.
Helen is survived by her daughters, Brenda (Alvin) Beers and Melanie Grider; grandchildren, Alex Beers, Joshua (Erica) Rice, Stephanie (Alejandro) Ayala, Ann Grider and Ben Grider; and one great-granddaughter, Jadelyn Rice; her brothers, Ron Wright and Gene Wright; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and her loyal companion dog, Lucy.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Meta and Vernon Wright; her husband, Leon Grider; her son, Lance Grider; her grandson, Zeb Rice; her great-grandson, Jack Rice; her brother, Lauren Wright and her sister, Darlene DeHass.
Helen never wanted to be in the limelight, so per her request, there will not be any funeral services.
Donations may be made in Helen’s name to your favorite charity.
