Harold “Butch” Berton, age 79, of Emmett, Idaho, passed away on January 1, 2021. Butch was born May 21, 1941, in Grass Valley, California, to Lawrence and Dimple Berton.
Most of Butch’s life was spent in California’s Bay Area. This is where he grew up, went to school, and held a long career in sheet metal construction. Most of the gas station canopies in the Hayward/San Leandro area were built by Butch.
Butch was married for 42 years to Sharon, who had many health issues for the last several years prior to her passing in May 2020. After she went to heaven, the Lord blessed Butch with Maggie. Butch and Maggie had four wonderful months together and he was the happiest he had been in a long time. Butch is also preceded in death by his children, Mike and Kimberly and his siblings, Cookie and Frank.
Hobbies? Just to list a few… hunting, archery, fishing, rock polishing, jewelry making, tool collecting (did you ever see his garage? J), and food canning. Butch’s horses, Comanche and Blaze, were a big part of his life. Every pants pocket, jacket pocket, and even the pockets in his wallet contained bits of hay and apple treats!
A man of MANY talents, if you needed it fixed, fashioned, built or invented, Butch was your guy. There are plenty of projects in Emmett that show his handywork. Butch was always the first to offer his help, the one you could lean on when you were troubled, and the one who would do whatever he could to make things better.
We will remember him as a loving, kind, giving, and stubborn (month-long hunting trips with plenty of injuries and no cell service) man. There are people all over Idaho that carry his handmade cross, one of his many ministries for the church.
Butch is survived by his wife, Maggie; children, Diana, Michele, Shelly (Bob); grandchildren, Nicholas, Caitlin, and Dillon; sister, Nina; and several nephews and nieces. Loving, honorable mention goes to his horses, Comanche and Blaze, and his dog, Molly.
