Guy Lamont McKinney was born on December 8, 1943 in Emmett, Idaho to Abe and Mary McKinney. He grew up on their family ranch in Ola, Idaho where his sister, Judy McCaulou and her husband, Harry, still live today. After high school Guy joined the Idaho Army National Guard and achieved the rank of Sergeant in Company D 1st Squadron 116th Armored Cavalry. Following his service in the military he worked for the US Forest Service as a log scaler.
He met and married Carolyn Rohrbacher (Schuh) in 1971 and had their two children, Ray in 1972, and Becky in 1975. Guy left the Forest Service for a time to do custom combining with his father-in-law, Ray Rohrbacher. Guy loved spending time in the Idaho mountains and decided to go back to work for the Forest Service as a road grader operator. He helped maintain roads around Lowman, Idaho City, Placerville, Deadwood, Atlanta and other places. He was very proud of the brand-new Cat 143H that he got to operate. Guy retired from the Forest Service with a total of 30+ years of civil service. He didn’t stay retired for very long, however, and took a job at Bogus Basin Ski Resort as a snowplow operator. Eventually, he decided to leave the snow behind and moved to Hawaii to live with Becky and her family for a time. He returned to Idaho and lived in Eagle for the remainder of his life.
Guy was very thoughtful and caring to the people he loved and admired. He spent as much time with his children and grandchildren as he was able to. He enjoyed hunting and ATVing with Ray and their friends in Northern Idaho. Guy had a deep love of old-time music and camped many years with Becky’s family at the National Oldtime Fiddlers’ Contest in Weiser. He will be dearly missed.
Guy is survived by his two children, Raymond Guy McKinney (Valerie) of Seeley Lake, Montana, his daughter, Rebecca Jean Church (Jason) of Kaneohe, Hawaii; two brothers, Larry McKinney (Shirley) and Vern McKinney (Carol); three sisters, Mary Lee Blackford, Judy McCaulou (Harry), and Sue Shekenis (Stan); seven grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and five step- great grandchildren. Guy is preceded in death by his parents; younger brother, Herbert (Herby), and brother Len McKinney. A special thank you to the staff and community at Revel Eagle for their kindness and support during these last years of Guys' life and to the Ola community and Ladies' Club.
A Memorial Service will be held in his honor at 11:00 AM on Monday, July 17, 2023 at the Ola Community Center in Ola, Idaho. Services are in the care of the Potter Funeral Chapel of Emmett.
