Guy William Farmer, 89, passed away on April 1st, 2024 in Garden Valley, Idaho, surrounded by family. Born on February 17, 1935 to Earl Farmer and Grace McNeil in Las Animas, Colorado, he was a warm, hard-working, lively brother in a family of eight children.
Guy enlisted in the United States National Guard and was honorably discharged at age eighteen. Shortly thereafter, he completed a hospital aide training program at the Veterans Administration in Palo Alto, California, where he met his wife Carol Anne Gleason. Their first date was a double with other people, but they liked each other so much, they switched partners halfway through. Guy and Carol married on February 18, 1956 at St. James Church in Davis, California. They started their family just over a year later with the birth of their first child, Michael.
Over the course of his life, Guy kept busy. He raised five kids, traversed California as a truck driver, trained show dogs, competed in bowling leagues, golfed, and served in his local church. In the early 1960s, Guy and a friend built a baseball field and started the first youth baseball league in Fremont, California, which is still going strong some sixty years later.
When at home, Guy was always fixing something, and you were just as likely to find him on the roof as the ground. He loved babies, feeding his dogs ice cream, and taking his grandchildren on lawnmower rides across his half acre in Tracy, California, where he lived for several years. In retirement, he moved to Copperopolis, and spent summers boating around Lake Tulloch and washing his enormous—and immaculate—RV, which he and Carol traveled in when visiting family out of state. He was also an avid card player, and made countless happy memories playing with his wife and their friends.
Guy was a family man, through and through, and hosted nearly every Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve for the long decades of his life. In his final years, he moved to Idaho, where his children returned the hospitality, keeping him comfortable and cared for until the end of his life.
Guy Farmer was a singular man. He didn’t speak, he bellowed. He didn’t fix, he perfected. His warmth, dedication, and bear hugs brought joy to everyone he came to know, and it’s this joy that lives on in each of us, even after he’s gone.
Guy is survived by his sister, Judy; his children, Michael, Bruce, Leslie, David, and Keith; his grandchildren, Amber, Ricky, Aimee, Kyle, Melissa, Sean, Jessica, Kevin, Brittany, Kaiya, Jacob, Josh, Erika, and Jonnie; numerous great-grandchildren; countless friends; and, finally, his wife Carol, who he promised to love forever. And did.
Guy will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at Emmett Cemetery in Emmett, Idaho. The celebration of his life will be held June 29, 2024 in Sonora, California. Location TBD.
Arrangements are under the care of the Potter Funeral Chapel.
