Glenn Higby JR Obituary

Glenn Edward Higby, Jr.
January 18, 1944 – November 14, 2024

Glenn Edward Higby, Jr., 80, passed away unexpectedly November 14, 2024, in Garden Valley, Idaho. Born on January 18, 1944 in King City, California, Glenn lived a life focused on family and friendships punctuated by adventure and thrills — whether skiing extreme terrain, competing in tough distance races, or tackling challenging projects with determination and humor. True to his nature, Glenn had many more plans in the works, and his sudden passing surely would not sit well with him.

Glenn is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 60 glorious years, Deanna; his three devoted daughters, Michelle Scranton (Steve), Stephanie Rosner (Philip), and Jennifer Patterson (Rod); his cherished grandchildren, Gabrielle Scranton (Derek), Isabella TenEyck (Colby), Brady Henderson, and Chase Henderson; and his loving sisters, Jean Countryman (Dave) and Barbara Jackson. Glenn also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors, all of whom were deeply impacted by his generosity and larger-than-life presence. He was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Helen Higby, Sr., and his sister, Joan Buck.

A fearless adventurer, devoted family man, and an unforgettable friend, Glenn shared his passion for skiing and the outdoors with countless others and his entire family, with whom he created many treasured mountain memories. His reputation for daring feats extended beyond the slopes. Glenn’s well-earned nickname “Rollover Higby” came from his days racing at Meridian Speedway, where his spectacular wipeouts were as memorable as his triumphs.

Running was another of Glenn’s lifelong passions. Just this past year, he proudly placed third in The Race to Robie Creek, a testament to his resilience and determination. On the morning of his passing, Glenn went out for his usual four-mile loop — a run that often took him hours, as he typically stopped to chat with everyone he encountered along the way. These daily runs were as much about connecting with others as they were about his love of movement and the outdoors.

Glenn grew up in Boise, graduating from Borah High School, and later worked on the Hells Canyon Dam. Upon realizing he was performing engineering calculations while being paid as a laborer, Glenn set his sights on higher education. He attended the University of Idaho, pledged Delta Chi, and graduated with a degree in electrical engineering. Glenn’s career spanning Chemical Plant management and subsequent executive leadership roles took him across the Midwest, where his hard work and dedication enabled an early retirement and pursuit of the adventures of which he always had dreamed.

In the summer of 2000, Glenn and Deanna settled in Garden Valley, where they built a stunning homestead along the Middlefork of the Payette River. There, they created a haven for family and friends that embodied Glenn’s boundless energy and reflected his passions.

Celebration of Glenn’s incredible life will be ongoing in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. In his honor, a special gathering will be held over the Fourth of July to celebrate his legacy, just as Glenn would have wanted —a big, joyous event surrounded by loved ones.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Share Winter Foundation — Glenn Higby, Jr. - In Memoriam (https://sharewinter.donorsupport.co/-/NWKXZRXB)— in honor of Glenn’s love of skiing and to provide opportunities for others to enjoy winter sports.

Glenn’s humor, drive, and zest for life will be deeply missed, but his adventurous spirit will live on through the fond memories he created with those he loved.
