Glen Eugene “Gene” Henderson
“A father is many things to his son. But most of all a teacher and idol.” -Glen Sylvester Henderson
Glen Eugene “Gene” Henderson, 85 of Meridian, Idaho, peacefully passed away in his sleep on January 20, 2025. He is now rejoicing and at rest with his Heavenly Father.
Gene was born in American Falls, Idaho on March 7, 1939 to the loving parents Glen Sylvester Henderson and Edith Lucille Jarmin Henderson of Emmett, Idaho. He was the oldest of five children including two brothers and two sisters.
In his earliest years, Gene was with his family in Portland, Oregon as his father welded Liberty Ships for the war effort. After the war, his father moved the family back to Idaho and then in the 1950’s, moved to the ranch in Eastern Oregon.
After Gene’s high school days, in 1956 he left the ranch to attend Boise Junior College, now known as Boise State University. It was there that he studied the machine trade. After graduation, Gene moved to San Mateo, California, and was employed by Litton Industries. While he was drafted into the Armed Services for possible deployment to Vietnam, it was found that he was better able to serve and contribute his machinist skills for the government defense contracts while working at Litton Industries.
It was at this time that he would meet the love of his life, Charlotte Marie Locke. They were introduced through mutual friends. As Charlotte would say, “they would go meet the boys on their school lunch break”. Love soon blossomed and Gene and Charlotte were married on November 18, 1961 in Belmont, California and would have a happy and blessed life together for 63 years.
In 1962, Gene and Charlotte would joyously welcome their first son, Tim. Their joy was doubled when their second son, Doug arrived in 1964. That same year, Gene moved his family back to the Valley of Plenty, Emmett Idaho. At this time, he was employed at Carnation Can Company, in Nampa, Idaho as a Machinist keeping the production lines up and running smoothly. In 1967, the family greeted a baby girl, Kelly Anne. This would complete the family of five.
Gene would also be employed at Adco West as a machinist in Emmett, Idaho, and later at Yanke Machine Shop in Boise. He would later go on to work for Hewlett Packard in Boise where he would become a very successful and talented Model Maker in the Model Shop. As a model maker he was responsible for bringing engineers concepts to market. His skills and work were well known beyond his work environment. He would go on to retire from Hewlett Packard after seventeen years.
But retire, he did not. Gene would become very active in his church where he served with both kindness and love. He had a very close relationship with his Lord and Savior. Every person he met was a friend and he could easily talk with anyone for hours.
Gene had a great passion for life which included many hobbies. He loved to fish by any means he could. Whether it was offshore, fly, float tube, or ice fishing, he happily did them all. He meticulously tied flies and built his own fly rods being ready for the next fishing trip. Gene loved to hunt and be in the Idaho Backcountry. When going on hunting or fishing trips with his son-in-law Elmer, he always made sure he had his gummy bears or worms. They were not for the fish!
Gene was an extremely talented craftsman, carpenter, and handyman. He had a tool or jig for any situation. There was nothing he could not fix.
Gene’s love for life shown through his family. His bride of 63 years was his greatest joy. He spent a lifetime of love, devotion and cherishing her all of their days. Their love together created a happy and loving home. He loved his children with great honor and respect. He gladly participated in all of the shenanigans that each grandchild brought along. Gene was the epitome of a husband, dad, and granddad. He loved and most of all was loved back.
Gene will always be remembered for his gentleness, patience, strength and wisdom. He was the greatest of men. He was his son's first role model and his daughter's first love.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Glen S. and Lucille Henderson of Emmett; brothers, Jerry Henderson of Emmett, Idaho and Jim Henderson of Emmett, Idaho; and sister Sharon McKendrick (Henderson) of Evanston, Wyoming.
Gene is survived by his wife, Charlotte Henderson of Meridian, Idaho; sons, Tim Henderson of Emmett, Idaho and Douglas (Margie) Henderson of Nampa, Idaho; daughter, Kelly (Quintin Elmer) Johnson of Fort Lupton, Colorado; grandchildren, Camille Henderson, Jessica Jorgensen, Cassi Buchta, Jakob Johnson, Quinton Hastings, Bradly Hastings, Christopher Henderson, Megan Henderson; 13 Great grandchildren; and sister, Carol Marie Henderson of Portland, Oregon.
The family would like to say a heartfelt thank you to St. Luke's Hospital for their kindness and care. They would especially like to say thank you to the St. Luke's Hospice team. Their love and professional care for Gene and Charlotte will always be cherished. They understood and carried them through the most difficult of times.
As a celebration of Gene’s great life, services will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, January 30, 2025 at Potter Funeral Chapel, 228 E. Main St, Emmett, Idaho 83617
