Fritz Nachtigall

Fritz Nachtigall, 85, passed away surrounded by the memories of a life defined by service, family, friendship, and a deep love of the outdoors.

Fritz was born on March 12, 1941, in Koenigshoff, Poland, to Mike and Emma Nachtigall. Following World War II, Fritz immigrated to the United States with his parents and five brothers in 1956. The family settled in Emmett, Idaho, where they proudly became naturalized American citizens and built a new life together.

On September 11, 1965, Fritz enlisted in the Idaho Army National Guard, beginning nearly 29 years of dedicated military service. Throughout his career, he served as a small arms repairman, tank turret repairman, track vehicle repairman, and artillery specialist. He was honorably discharged on April 11, 1994, with the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Fritz found his greatest joy in Idaho's mountains and lakes. An avid outdoorsman, he loved camping and fishing and treasured the time he spent at Bayhorse and Mosquito Flats near Challis, as well as Horsethief Reservoir near Cascade. For more than 30 years, he shared these adventures and his love of nature with his beloved companion and partner, Leta McCullough.
Fritz was preceded in death by his parents, Mike and Emma Nachtigall; his brothers Ernst ("Ernie"), Bernhardt ("Bernie"), and Reinholdt ("Ronnie") Nachtigall; and his beloved companion, Leta McCullough.

He is survived by his brothers, Horst ("Michael") Nachtigall and Herbert ("Herbie") Nachtigall; his son, Mike Nachtigall; his grandchildren, Araceli, Phoebe, and Nash; and his great-grandson, Nikolai.

Fritz will be remembered most for his unwavering love of family, his infectious laugh, and his generous spirit. Friends and family alike knew him as a truly great man who was always willing to lend a helping hand. His kindness, sense of humor, and willingness to help others left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

A graveside funeral service with military honors will be held on Friday, July 31, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery, 10100 Horseshoe Bend Road, Boise, Idaho, near Dry Creek Cemetery. There will be a celebration of life at the Idaho Pizza located at 7444 W. Fairview from 12:00 - 2:00 PM.

Fritz's legacy of service, loyalty, and friendship will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
