Emanuel "Manny" Newell Obituary

Emanuel Leon “Manny” Newell 92, passed away on July 3, 2024 at home in Montour, Idaho with family by his side. He was born October 19, 1931 in Montour to Brennon “Ben” Kirkham Newell and May Gertrude (Church) Newell.

Manny was delivered at the home of his grandmother Eliza Jane Newell who was a midwife. He attended school through the 8th grade in Montour, leaving home at the age of 15. He worked various ranch jobs including the Gatfield ranch and in the woods as a hand to the camp cooks chopping wood and doing heavy lifting. At the age of 19 he joined the Navy serving 4 years active and 27 years in the Naval reserves. He completed his GED while serving in the Navy and obtained his associates degree at Boise Junior College in 1957. Manny was a Boise City Police Officer for 13 months (1956–1957). He joined the Idaho State Police in 1957. Manny worked his way up the ranks from Port of Entry to Captain before retiring in 1985. At that time, he retired from the Naval Reserves as well. He was a highly decorated pistol shooter (local, state, and national) winning over 200 trophies and numerous medals.

Manny was a devoted family man and cherished his time with all of them. He especially loved Sunday family dinners. He was a very hard worker; however, he played hard as well. He loved the outdoors and the mountains, camping and picking huckleberries was often times the family’s vacation. He loved to hunt and fish and spend time at their cabin at Fall Creek on Anderson Ranch Reservoir. Falling trees was one of his favorites. He loved the sound as they crashed to the ground. When they retired, Manny and Doris traveled south spending nearly every winter for 38 years in sunny Arizona. Their travels did take them into Mexico and to the southern tip of the Baja for fishing with his dear friends Phil and Betty Jones. Manny had a great love of music learning to chord on the guitar from his mother as a young boy. With his jovial personality and love of music he volunteered and ran the music jam at Blackrock RV Village for 20 years.

He was preceded in death by his father Brennon Kirkham “Ben” Newell; his mother May Gertrude Newell; sister Verna Mae Newell; brothers Brennon Kirkham “Buck” Newell, Harry Don Newell, and Maynard Vernon Newell; and his beloved son David Brad Newell.

He is survived by his beloved wife and soul mate of 69 ½ years, Doris J. Newell; his brother Brennon Kirkham “BK” Newell & Jerri; his daughters Linda Newell and Kimberly Newell-LeMaster & Clifford; daughter in law Marilyn Newell; 14 loving grandchildren Chris Hunt & Carmen, Eric Gooden & Reagan, Dustin Kerr & Lacy, Ryan Sherman & Audra, Matthew Sherman, Laura Newell & Anna, Barry Newell, and DeNali Toombs & Jake; 13 great grandchildren, with a 14th due in December 2024; and a great great grandson due in October 2024; along with many extended family members.
