She worked hard at growing and canning vegetables and chickens, and she loved to do yard and pasture work and upholstery in her spare time. In their later years, Ellen and Marion would travel to Yuma, Arizona in the winter where they tended several RV rental spaces for friends, enjoyed yard work and visited with the many people they knew there.
