Ella Mae Johns, of Sweet, Idaho, passed away on May 14, 2024, at her home surrounded by family. She died just 3 days short of her 97th birthday.
Ella Mae was born on May 17, 1927, to very good parents: Frank James Hooker and Elma Jessie Croom Hooker. Her family consisted of 2 brothers, Milton and a younger brother, Ralph.
Her young life was filled with music, fiddles, harmonicas, guitars and singing. Ella Mae loved to play the piano and did so in many church activities and at home with her own family.
Ella Mae and Louis were childhood friends and dated off and on during her high school years. When she was a Junior, 17 years old, they decided to get married. On July 15, 1944, they went to Lordsburg, New Mexico along with their mothers and got married. The war was on and Louis joined the Navy before he was drafted by the Army. Ella Mae finished high school and joined the ranks of Rosie's Riveters. Louis and Ella Mae later sealed their love in the Mesa Arizona Temple while on leave from the Navy on October 18, 1945.
They went on to have 5 children, Ken, Milton (Bud), Ward, Christina, and Kathleen. Ella Mae has 18 grandchildren, 49 great grandchildren and 1 on the way and 2 great-great grandchildren. She was a totally devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Ella Mae’s life was well-lived and she was loved by all who came around her. She was a master gardener and after completing the course, she was a great resource to all. She gave selfless service to her community and to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Three of her highlights were serving an 18-month mission to Sitka, Alaska in 1983 with her husband, Louis. On returning home in February of 1985, Louis and Ella Mae purchased ”Roystone Hot Springs” and after a lot of hard work it has become a fun place for all to enjoy. This became the home where they lived until the end of their lives. They loved the Roystone home and especially the grandkids that have lived there and the grandkids who enjoyed coming and swimming at grandma’s and grandpa’s pool. She also served many years in the Boise Idaho Temple alongside of her husband.
She was preceded in death by 1 grandson, Cody; a daughter, Christina and Louis passing away in 2020. She is survived by three sons: Ken, Bud (Sharla), James "Ward" (Kathy), and a daughter, Kathleen.
There will be a viewing Monday, May 20th at the Potter Funeral Chapel from 6:00-8:00 PM. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, May 21st at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Sweet with a viewing from 10:00-10:45 AM. Interment will follow at the Emmett Cemetery.
