Edna "Carolyn" Hurd, 88, of Emmett Idaho departed peacefully from this side of heaven on Tuesday, March 3, 2026. In perfect timing, she went to be with our glorious Savior Jesus Christ, who no doubt met Carolyn at her arrival with a warm heavenly welcome, blanketing her in the comfort and peace of Paradise.
Carolyn was born on February 16, 1938, in Myrtle Creek, Oregon, to Bill and Beaulah Kelsey. Carolyn had two older siblings, Jackie and Billy. Early in her life, her mother and siblings moved to Enterprise, Oregon where her maternal family helped raise them from childhood into adulthood. Carolyn was an active country girl, always helping around the farm with chores and caring for her Grandma Mathews. Carolyn graduated from Enterprise High School in 1954, and later Kinman Business University in Spokane, Washington.
In 1959, Carolyn married her first husband, Bob Nelson of Emmett, Idaho. Bob and Carolyn had two sons-Glen and Chris. On September 29, 1973, at the age of 35, Carolyn married Ed Hurd, the love of her life. Together Ed and Carolyn raised her two boys alongside Ed’s two daughters, Donna and Debbie. Ed and Carolyn had several grandchildren and great grandchildren throughout the years who they loved to spend time with dearly. In 2023, Ed and Carolyn were blessed with the celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary surrounded by their family and friends.
Living in Emmett, Carolyn spent some time working at the local fruit packing sheds and in all irony, could not stand cherries. She spent much of her time later in life as a homemaker and caretaker for her Aunt Mary Lou, husband Ed, and cat Peanut. Carolyn was a loving wife, mother, neighbor, and friend.
Carolyn learned to play the piano “by ear” as a young girl and enjoyed playing until her arthritic fingers would no longer allow her to play. Carolyn was an avid church goer and loved the Lord with all her heart. She enjoyed listening to her husband Ed and friends play Gospel music and studying the bible. She liked to watch Jimmy Swaggart on TV when she was unable to attend her home church for Sunday service.
Carolyn enjoyed her morning cup of coffee with a splash of vanilla creamer and would typically have a stash of her favorite Tillamook French vanilla ice cream in the freezer for an evening treat. She loved her Sonic Cheeseburgers and Cokes and frequently had a new pair of fun, fuzzy slippers on her feet. During the summer months, one of Carolyn’s favorite activities was visiting local fruit stands in the area. She would never hesitate to say yes to an afternoon outing with her friends.
Carolyn always acted surprised when she saw you no matter how much time had passed between visits. She’d place down whichever new book she was reading, greeting you with an “Oh, hi!”, grin on her face, eyes shining brightly. We will forever listen for the echo of Carolyn’s sweet voice as she’d respond with an “Eew-yuck” when she disliked something or the southern twang she’d get in her voice at our departure when she’d tell us not to worry “I’m Fine”!
In May of 2023, Carolyn suffered a massive heart attack and was told by her cardiologist that there was nothing more to be done. The doctor provided Carolyn with the grim news that her heart would likely fail her in the next week or so. Unbeknownst to the doctor, the Lord had much more in store for Carolyn. She went home and lived life to her fullest, not once looking back to that day, and lived another wonderful 2 years 9 months.
During this time, the Lord blessed Carolyn with many new friends, and she developed numerous close friendships. She loved each one of her newfound friends as if they were her family. Carolyn kept her faith until the very end, knowing she would one day be embraced by the loving arms of her Lord, Jesus. Carolyn was kind-hearted, giving, loving, very strong-willed and so determined. She had an impact on each person she ever came across. Carolyn’s last years were never spent in vain, she had so much fun and enjoyed all life handed her. She trusted the Lord each step of the way until she took her last breath.
Matthew 25:23 His Lord said unto him, well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things; enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.
There will be a Celebration of Life for Carolyn at New Life Celebration church in Emmett on Sunday March 29, 2026 at 3:00 PM.
Arrangements were in the care of the Potter Funeral Chapel.
