Duane Vickery Obituary

Our father, Duane Vickery, passed away peacefully at his home in Emmett, Idaho at the age of 89 on December 8, 2025.  Duane was born in Emmett, Idaho on July 2, 1936, to George Melvin and Helen Whiteley Vickery.   The third of six children, the family lived on Little Rock Road and soon moved to a farm in Sand Hollow where he lived throughout his youth.  In this setting Duane was in his element, at every opportunity, riding his horse in the foothills with his dog trailing along.  He enjoyed hunting for pheasants when he was younger but became most passionate about fishing as he grew older.  Many of his grandchildren talk about the epic fishing expeditions with grandpa on his pontoon boat at (you name it) body of water in SW Idaho.  He attended school at Letha, Hanna, and Emmett High School.  He most enjoyed FFA and his project, which was a registered Holstien heifer that became the family milk cow, living long into the early 1960s.
In 1954 Duane married Margaret Spencer, and together they raised their 4 boys in Emmett on a small farm located on West Idaho Blvd. At the age of 18, Duane was employed at the Boise Cascade lumber mill in Emmett, where he worked for over 40 years until his retirement.  After his dear wife, Margaret, passed in 2003, Duane married Emily Nielson, a loving companion who was by his side at his passing.
A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Duane was asked to serve in many capacities.  He loved people, and this attribute helped him to be an effective leader.  Duane and Margaret served a full-time mission for the church in Dallas, Texas.  Later, Duane and Emily served a full-time mission together at the Sixth Crossing in Wyoming.  He also served for many years as a temple ordinance worker in the Boise and Meridian Temples.
Duane was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; his sister, Wenona; and brothers, Ronald, Wayne, and Jim.  He is survived by his wife, Emily; children, Steve (Cindy), Mike, Kirk (Lauretta), Tim (Arlene); 20 grandchildren; 75 great grandchildren; sisters, Phyllis, Renae, Mary, Kay and Julia; brothers, Donald, Mark and Jerry; and many of Emily’s siblings, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 22, 2025, at 11:00 AM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - 980 W. Central Road Emmett.  There will be a viewing at 10:00 AM before the funeral service and a viewing on Sunday, December 21, 2025 from 4:00-6:00 PM at Potter Funeral Chapel in Emmett.  Burial will be at the Bramwell Cemetery.
