Doug Watson Obituary

Douglas Watson, 91, of Sweet, Idaho, died February 17, 2026 at his home, surrounded by his family.   Doug was born September 3, 1934 in Winnsboro Louisiana to John and Belle Watson. He grew up farming and decided to join the Pacific fleet of the US Navy in his late teens which brought him to the Pacific Northwest. He was a veteran of the Korean War. After his discharge from the Navy, he pursued a career as an auto mechanic. He married and raised three children in Bremerton, Washington. He hunted the Olympic and Cascade mountains with his son Richard and multiple longtime hunting friends. They would go deep into the woods by horseback and even established a hidden camp and corral until it was discovered by Forest Rangers. He also enjoyed salmon fishing on the Columbia River for several years as well as trout fishing at various locations in the Olympic Mountains.  Doug lived in the Puget Sound area until his retirement from Pacific Northwestern Bell (Qwest) at which time he moved to Sweet Idaho. He purchased acreage and established a home overlooking the Sweet valley and Montour. He enjoyed fishing at the Sage Hen Reservoir for trout, catfishing and catching crappie at Steck Park in the Snake River canyon. Every day a herd of deer cross his land and he would sit on his deck enjoying the view, sharing stories while having a beer with friends and just taking in the mountainous beauty. Last fall, at the age of 91, he shot his last deer from his deck and gave it to his longtime friend, Jerry Dudley.
Doug is survived by his three children, Kathy Watson (Tom Simon) of Sierra Vista, Arizona, Richard Watson of Sweet, Idaho and Susan Murphy (Jim Murphy) of Geneva, Illinois; his nieces Donna Smith of Winnsboro, Louisiana, Margie Ogden of Delhi, Louisiana and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Marguerette Hendry of Winnsboro, Louisiana in December 2024.
He will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him. A celebration of life will be held at his residence at a future date. At his request, his ashes will be scattered on his land. Cremation is being handled by Potter Funeral Chapel in Emmett, Idaho. A memorial marker will be placed in the Boise Veterans Cemetery.
