DeLoy Gale Mecham was a hardworking man, loving husband, and wonderful father and grandfather. He passed peacefully on December 27th, 2023 at the age of 86 in Emmett, Idaho. Born January 26th, 1937 in Tremonton, Utah, he was the son of Marlow and Guila (Mitchell) Mecham. DeLoy was the second born of six children. The family truly understood and knew the meaning of hard work. They moved from Tremonton, Utah to Burley Idaho, where DeLoy attended school from 1st through 6th grade. In 1955, the family moved to Warden Washington where DeLoy graduated from Warden High School.
In the summer of 1956, he worked on a neighbor’s farm. During the winter, he worked for the Bureau of Reclamation on a survey crew. The following winter he worked at the sugar factory in Moses Lake, Washington. DeLoy returned to Emmett, Idaho and drove milk truck, hauling milk cans to the plant. He met his beloved wife, Janet Moffat, on a blind date in April 1958. The two were married February 28th, 1959. DeLoy worked at the mill for ten years. The couple lived in a small trailer, shared a 5 cent Coke for Saturday night date, and continued to save until they were able to purchase their first farm on the bench. By May of 1962, they were proud owners of eight milk cows. Love and dedication continued to bless the family, and together, they raised three children.
He was a kind and loving man, spending time with family and friends was important to him. He enjoyed people and learning, he was on the FHA board for 8 years and 18 years on the Emmett Irrigation District. In 1978 DeLoy and Janet built a new home on the bench where they milked over 100 head of dairy cows. In 1998, they sold the cows and decided to partially retire. They celebrated this by a vacation to Alaska, fishing for halibut and salmon. In 2013, DeLoy and Janet officially retired and moved closer to Emmett.
DeLoy was a devoted husband and father, and his family was the cornerstone of his life. Above all, he loved his wife of 65 years. They are a true example of what kindness and love should be. He leaves behind his wife, Janet (Moffat), children: David (Jennifer) Mecham, Nadine (Rick) Welch, and Cynthia Mecham, 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. He survived by his brother Glen (Carla) Mecham, Arvil (Laun) Mecham, Gary Mecham, sister Elnora (Howard) Thomas and sister in law Mona Mecham. He was preceded in death by his brother Edward and sister in law Peggy. DeLoy will be remembered as a loving and reliable father, grandfather, and husband. His stories, wisdom, and warmth of his company will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Services to celebrate DeLoy’s life will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, January 3, 2024 with viewing starting at 12:00, noon at the Potter Funeral Chapel in Emmett. Burial will follow at the Emmett Cemetery.
