Daryleen Abrell McMillan, a woman whose heart was as big as her crafting stash and whose spirit sparkled like a freshly varnished pinecone, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2025—just ten days shy of her 81st birthday. She left behind a legacy of laughter, love, and enough handcrafted treasures to fill a craft fair.
Born in Shelton, Washington, on February 20, 1944, to Paul Weldon and Opal Maxine (Thomas) Abrell, Daryleen’s journey took her from Klamath Falls, Oregon, where her sister, Lorna, joined the family, to the Abrell family ranch in Emmett, Idaho, in 1953. She graduated from Emmett High School in 1962, and then Boise called, where she spent 38 years working in medical records at St. Luke's Hospital before retiring in 2009.
Daryleen had a knack for finding joy in the simple things. A sunny afternoon spent hunting for the perfect pinecone was a day well spent, and those pinecones often transformed into whimsical creations under her talented hands. From woodworking and painting to doll making, she could do it all. Rides along the Greenbelt were a favorite—an opportunity to soak in the beauty of nature, pick up a new-to-her book from the little free library, and sit by the Boise River to read. But nothing brought a twinkle to her eye quite like her great-granddaughters. They were her pride and joy, and she cherished every moment spent with them.
Daryleen is now reunited with her parents, Paul and Maxine Abrell; her brother-in-law, John Hartman; and her beloved partner of over 40 years, Bill Shafer. We imagine them strolling together along the streets of Heaven, hunting for pinecones.
Daryleen’s vibrant spirit will live on through her daughter, Tressa Bromgard; her grandchildren, Tara and Joe Walbuck, Ricky Nelson and Jenna Conklin, and Hailey Mangum; her adored great-granddaughters, Cyan, Addria, Jaya, and Aliya Walbuck; her sister, Lorna Hartman; her nieces and nephews, Jeanie, Aaron, and Lane Poole, Craig and Bertha Hartman, Lisa and Steve Campbell, and Chris and Marilyn Hartman. Daryleen was blessed with lifelong friendships, including her dear friend Eva McMillan, her friends and neighbors Valerie Allen and Kelly Hannula, and many other amazing cousins, friends, coworkers, and neighbors who were like family.
She will be deeply missed, but her crafty spirit and joyful memories will forever be cherished.
There will be a graveside service at the Emmett Cemetery on Friday, April 4, 2025 at 2:00 PM.
