Carol Ann Barnes lost her battle with Parkinsons after a very long fight, on June 25, 2025.
Born February 16, 1945, Carol was 80 years old.
She made her life in Santa Rosa, California, and I believe she arrived on the back of a horse. Anyone who knew her would agree that she had a passion for horses that was never ending.
Being her niece, I got to share some of those horseback riding adventures with her, though not as many as I would have liked.
Carol spent much of her life with friends, and they did a lot of riding.
Her best friend Nancy has shared a few memories here which I want to share. These two were very close!
"I MET CAROL IN 1970 AT A BUSINESS MEETING, DURING A BREAK SHE INTRODUCED HERSELF AND ASKED IF I’D EVER HEARD OF SOMETHING CALLED NATRC, THAT WAS THE BEGINNING OF A 55 YEAR FRIENDSHIP.
CAROL HAD RIDDEN ALL HER LIFE BUT CONDITIONING FOR DISTANCE RIDING WAS QUITE DIFFERENT AND REQUIRED A COMMITMENT. SHE STARTED RIDING WITH ME EVERY FRIDAY, THIS BECAME OUR SPECIAL TIME WHEN AFTER THE RIDE WE EVALUATED OUR HORSES PERFORMANCE, TALKED ABOUT THE WAY OF THE WORLD, MAYBE THREW IN A LITTLE GOSSIP AND ENJOYED A TOMATO BEER, SOMETHING THAT BECAME OUR TRADEMARK OVER THE YEARS."
Carol moved to Idaho to be with her family in 2016, when she was struggling with her disease. We really enjoyed the time that we were able to spend with her at family gatherings and a little riding.
Rest in peace, our dearest Carol!
