Arlie Joe Stiles, 90, of Emmett, passed away early Tuesday morning, December 17, 2024, in a Boise, Idaho hospital. He was born September 16, 1934 in Okemah, Okfuskee, Oklahoma, to Ernest Lee Stiles and Lettie Sparks.
Arlie was the 3rd of 4 children. He moved with his family to Emmett, Idaho, when he was 9 years old in 1943. He played sports in school and graduated from Emmett High School in 1953. He married Clella Borup in1954 and they continued to live in Emmett for the rest of his life, celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary this past year.
Arlie served in the National Guard for 8 years. In 1958, he became employed by the Emmett US Post Office as a substitute mail carrier, making $2 an hour. He later became a permanent rural carrier. When Arlie retired after 35 years, he said he missed the daily interaction with people on his mail route.
In 1961, Arlie, with the help of his father-in-law, William Borup, built a home on the bench next door to his in-laws, where he and Clella have continued to live for the past 63 years. Following in his father-in-law’s footsteps, he studied and passed the test to obtain an amateur radio license.
Arlie was proud of his Native American heritage and was a certified member of the Cherokee nation. He was a perfectionist as a talented woodworker. He made fine quality furniture for his family and his bookcases, benches and grandfather clocks are treasured by his children and grandchildren.
Arlie enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting with his family and spent many summer afternoons at Black Canyon Reservoir boating with his family.
Arlie was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a convert to the church and served his first church job as Explorer Scout leader for 9 months before he was baptized. He served in many positions including counselor in two bishoprics, high counselor and counselor in 3 different stake presidencies, 2 of them in the Weiser Stake where he traveled to Weiser at least twice a week for 3 1⁄2 years. Then he served with President James Brinkerhoff for another 9 years, during which time they oversaw the construction of the Emmett Stake Center – a project that required countless hours of dedication.
Arlie is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ernest Jr.; sister, Gladys Roberts; and granddaughter, Jamie Rood. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Clella; his brother, Sherrill (Linda); sons, Monte (Sandi), Lonnie (Bonnie) and Jeff (Angie); daughters, Lori and Shari, 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Arlie’s legacy of love, faith, and service will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Funeral services will be held Monday, December 23, 2024 at 1:00 P.M. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Emmett LDS Stake Center - 980 W. Central Rd.) Viewing will be held one hour prior to the service. Services will be followed by burial at the Emmett Cemetery. Services are in the care of the Potter Funeral Chapel of Emmett.
